Dance of the Skyscraper Islands, stop animation video, 2017

In this video loop, folded paper buildings create a motif of skyscrapers repeated and animated against an expanse of ocean. The skyscrapers are like islands -- half emerge from the water while the other half sink, again and again, perpetually. Is the sea level rising or abating? Do the buildings grow from the sea, or are they being eroded by the ocean? They are caught in this rhythmic dance cycle forever.

Also collected on this page are images of the sculptural explorations of folded and formed paper, that were subsequently used to create Dance of the Skyscraper Islands.

This work began in residency at Hangar CIA in Lisbon, Portugal, during the summer of 2016. The editing was completed in 2017.
